But before we get on with the 2-day travel guide to Amritsar, you go ahead and book a hotel and a flight to Amritsar.
Once your flight has landed in Amritsar and you have checked in your hotels, you can kickstart your day 1 in Amritsar like this!
Golden Temple is the most famous Amritsar attraction. People come to visit this gurdwara from far and wide. In fact, many people come to Amritsar only to pray at this gurdwara, such is the devotion and serenity around the place. Also, the place is as beautiful as it is spiritual. The magnificent exterior layer of gold and the charming glasswork, meenakari work and semi-precious stonework on the interiors are simply breathtaking. So, there can’t be a better start to your Amritsar trip than visiting this gurdwara. Come to this gurdwara, soak in its spirituality and beauty and sit by the ghat of Amrit Sarovar, surrounding the temple!
After you have spent time at the gurdwara, head straight to the langar (community kitchen) and have a delicious meal cooked by the volunteers with love!
The temple remains open from 4 am to 11 pm. Plan your visit between 7.30 to 9 am and have your breakfast by 9.30 am or 10 am.
After 10 am, once you have spent time in the gurdwara and had your breakfast, you can start sightseeing! The area around the Golden Temple has many Amritsar famous places. And for day 1 sightseeing, you can explore them, since it will be more practical and convenient. The places you must see around the Golden temple are Durgiana Temple, Akal Takht, Tarn Taran, Maharaja Ranjit Singh Museum and Jama Masjid Khairuddin. One of the many Amritsar places to visit that deserves a special mention is the Jallianwala Bagh. This place bore witness to the horrible massacre of April 13, 1919. This is a place that you should visit once and pay your respect.
The Wagah Border is also nearby. But let’s keep that for the second day. Your day 1 sightseeing will end around 7 pm or 7.30. And then you can move on to the next part!
After you have seen all that you had planned for day 1, take our advice and enjoy the food culture of Amritsar. After all, Amritsar is in the state of Punjab and the one thing Punjabis are all crazy about is their food! Chole-kulche followed by a glass of lassi is a must! And then, you can eat the different types of street food served on the roads. While we are on the topic, here are some of the famous food places in Amritsar. Kulwant Singh Kulche Wala – Old, Kulche Wala, Bhai Kulwant Singh Kulchian Wale, Kesar Da Dhaba and Neelam’s.
By 10, complete your dinner and go back to your hotel room. End the day a little early, have a good night’s rest so that you can wake up the next morning in full energy, all set for day 2 in Amritsar!
Day 2 has a lot in store for you, including the Wagah Border Tour, that we missed on day 1!
Take our words and try waking up a little early, by 6.30 am or 7 am. The roads and lanes of the city will not be much busy then and you can actually enjoy the calm and peace the city offers. Yes, you can walk, but we suggest renting a cycle and going on those heritage tours. While you paddle through the lanes, you will see many Amritsar points of interest. And the tour guide will tell you all the interesting stories about the places you see.
By 9 am the tour will end. You can have your breakfast and then visit the Partition Museum. By 12 pm, complete your morning sightseeing and come back to your hotel. Have lunch and then, get ready for more sightseeing!
Finally, you are all set to see the Wagah Border. Before we start exploring, here’s something you probably want to know. The reason we didn’t add Wagah Border to the day 1 itinerary is that there is a lot to see here and it will require a little time. So, better come here on the second day, so that you can spend the required time. Now to the attractions here! This is an open border between India and Pakistan. So, just being here, seeing the border will be a fascinating experience for anyone. What else you should look forward to is the flag-lowering ceremony (of the two countries) during the sunset.
You can stay at the border till 4 pm and then you will have to come back. But, day 2 doesn’t end here. We still have some activities left!
There are many local markets in Amritsar where you can buy local arts and crafts, traditional clothes, jewellery and different souvenirs. You can visit any market you find nearby. But our top pick will be Hall Bazar. And in between shopping, do a favour on your tastebuds and dig in some delicious food served in the street stalls and restaurants around the bazaars.
While you shop and eat to your heart’s content, day 2 of your Amritsar tour comes to an end. You will have to fly back home, but you will be coming back with more than you took to Amritsar. All the souvenirs you bought and a bouquet of beautiful memories!
