Triund Trek: Complete Guide for an Adventure Experience

First thing first, deciding on the time for planning the trek! The trek is open throughout the year except for the months of January and February! During the two months, Triund generally receives heavy snowfalls and that makes some of the trails completely inaccessible. So, avoid these two months and you will be good to go! But if you want our recommendation, we will say the time between March and June is the Triund trek best time to go. In fact, Triund is considered to be one of the treks to do in India in March. The weather this time remains pleasant and you will get clear views.

Before you start your Triund Trek, you will have to know how to reach Triund trek. So, why don’t we get that sorted! The base camps for Triund Trek are in Dharamkot-Kangra, Mcleodganj-Dharamshala and Bhagsunag-Dharamshala. You can board a flight to Dharamshala or Gaggal (Kangra) airport. If you want to take the railways, the nearest railway station to both is at Pathankot.

Let us break down a few details and then come to a verdict, alright? The trail moves from gradual to steep ascents. That means, even if you are a novice, you can trek easily. Also, the distance to Triund from the base camp (any of the three) is not that much. So, you will not get tired. Basically, the first 5 km of the trek will be easy. After that, the trek becomes a little steeper and hence, will require you to walk in a sturdy manner. The stretch named 22 curves is going to be a little difficult since it actually has 22 curves.

So, if you have an overall look, the verdict on this trek’s difficulty level is easy. But there’s a catch. The closer you are to the winter months, the tougher the trek can become. And if there is snow, the trails will become quite hard.

With all the basic details in mind, it is time to finally plan the Triund hill trek. We will do so in two phases spread over two days. And among the three base camps, we are starting the trek from Dharamkot base camp. If you want to start your trek from any of the other two base camps you can. The two phrases will remain the same, ascending to Triund from the selected base camp and then descending from Triund to base camp.

The first day of your Triund Trek begins! Wake up as early as possible, have your breakfast and then get started. Locate the water tank near Dharamkot Government Primary School. Beside that water tank, you will find a trail going through the forest. That’s your way! After walking for some time, you will reach the Galu Temple. Here you can stop for a few minutes and sip on some tea from the shop located just below the temple. You will also spot the trekking trail with a forest checkpoint. No charges will be required, but your ID and backpacks will be checked.

Once the checking is done, continue your trekking. The trails will start rising here. But you will be rewarded with oak forests, Laka ridge and clear views of the Dhauladhar range. From here onwards, you will face many carves (22 in total), rhododendron forests, a cafe and some dhabas as you make your way to the Triund! Once you have reached, first of all, take some time to witness the serene natural beauty around you. Then have some tea and food. And set up your tent or stay in the Forest Rest House (prior booking needed!

The distance of this trek is 5.45 km and it will take you around 4 hours.

After camping at Triund overnight, wake up early so that you don’t miss the sunrise. Trust us, the sunlight falling over the Kangra Valley will be a sight worth remembering forever! If you want, you can spend some time here, clicking pictures and soaking in the beauty here. Once you are done, start trekking down the same way you came up. Descending Triund to the base camp obviously will take less time than ascending. And hence, it will be the best time to go slow and explore the cafes and other spots on the trails.

Two more things! Instead of going for a 2-day trek, you can cover the whole trek in 1-day as well. However, you will not have enough time to explore the trail as much! Also, if you have time on your hand, instead of making a stop at Triund and then coming back to base camp, you can trek further to Lahesh cave and then trek back.

Since you will be descending the same trail, you will be covering a distance of 4.45 km and it will take you another 4 hours to return to the base camp.
