However, with the state's plan to work on a metro line that connects the airport to the railway, the station has been shut for construction. The airport's name came from independence activist, Jayaprakash Narayan. The airport's runway is quite short and cannot accommodate heavy aircraft operations. Hence, it is known to be classified as a restricted international airport. Patna Airport is one of the busiest airports in the country with their passenger traffic increasing by 30.6 per cent, as of 2018-2019. Hence, the Airport Authority of India has proposed a measure to expand and modernise the external and internal facilities. The new terminal building is slated to have two levels and will be equipped with six aerobridges along with an apron to park about 14 aircraft.
