Best Time to Visit Leh

Like in every other season, Ladakh is beautiful to look at during summer. It is also the busiest time of the year for the town. You can also visit the Zanskar Valley and leave it to the mountains to cast their spell on you. Trekking and river rafting are some of the top-rated activities that are quite popular here. Khardung La is a high mountain pass in Ladakh's Jammu and Kashmir region. It is also the gateway to get to Nubra Valley.

Chadar Trek is a famous and one of the most challenging treks in India. It's a 6-day trek and takes place between January to March. How to reach Leh (Transportation)

By Air

The Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport in Leh is the nearest one and is 5 km away from the town. Since it is a famous tourist destination, the number of flights to Leh from Delhi, Mumbai, Srinagar and other major cities is quite frequent. By Rail

There is no direct domestic route to Leh by rail. The closest stations are Chandigarh, Pathankot and Kalka. You will have to take a cab from one of these stations.

  About Khajuraho

Khajuraho, in Madhya Pradesh, is one of the architectural masterpieces of India that is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Not just one but Khajuraho has several temples to its credit. Built around the 950 AD and 1050 AD by the Chandela dynasty, Khajuraho is recognised for the erotic carvings and sculptures on the walls and pillars of the temple. The walls of the temples depict the most erotic forms of love and also goes on to show how liberal and progressive people were back then. However, the temples have been a topic of heated debate for quite some time now. In fact, a lot of people had even tried to destroy some of the temples but could never destroy all of it. Since Khajuraho is a complex of temples, there are very few things to do apart from visiting all of the temples.

The Kandariya Mahadev temple, the Lakshman temple, Dulhadev temple, Vishwanath temple, Lakshmi temple, Devi Jagdamba temple, Adinath temple, Nandi temple and the list of temples to visit is pretty long. What's unique about all of these temples is the architecture and the intricate carvings on the wall. Almost all temples have sculptures of Gods, Goddesses and nymphs indulging in intimate, passionate moments. There are also a lot of museums, national park, waterfalls and the local street foods that you can add to your itinerary. You must also catch the light and sound show that is being put up in the other grounds of the temples. You will learn more about the inception of and the history of the temples. The show explains the significance of each one of the temples that were built and why they were formed in a certain way.

The ancient temples, however, were not discovered until 1838 when the British found it. Although a lot of the structures are in ruins, you cannot deny that they are architectural marvels. Visit the State Museum of Tribal and Folk Art to know more about the culture. You'll also find a lot of masks, paintings and handicrafts. You can also take a walk around the garden that surrounds it. The Archaeological Museum is yet another place that you can visit while you are in Khajuraho. It was called the Jardine Museum earlier, and it has over 2000 artistic relics from the 10th and 12th-century temples; relics of Hinduism and Jainism.

You can also visit Raneh Falls, which is approximately 20 km away from Khajurao but totally worth it. You will find several big and small waterfalls in this area. If you are visiting the city in February or March, do catch the Khajuraho dance festival, organised by the Madhya Pradesh Kala Parishad. October to February is considered ideal for visiting Khajuraho. The heat can get pretty unbearable during summer and the monsoons too humid, which is why winter is deemed to be perfect for a visit to the Khajuraho temple.

You can either book a hotel in Khajuraho or find a homestay or hostel; you'll find whatever fits your budget and convenience. Getting to or around the city is also not a major inconvenience.

Best Time to Visit Khajuraho

October to February is when the city experiences winter and is also considered as the ideal time to take a trip to Khajuraho. A lot of youngsters have also started adding Khajuraho to their travel plans, which is one of the reasons that the city also has hostels to accommodate them. The temperature drops to 4 degree Celsius at night, and the days are quite warm. The cold weather and the slight mist add more charm to the temples of the city. Monsoon is from July to September, and while it does turn the city green, the climate becomes quite humid. Not to mention, outdoor activities like trekking are shut down during this season to avoid any risks.

Summer in Khajuraho, much like the rest of India, starts in April and ends in June. During this time, the temperatures can go up to 47 degree Celsius and is not the best time to visit the city. The unbearable heat will exhaust you and leave you dehydrated. It's best to avoid travelling to the city during this season.

Places to Visit in Khajuraho

Since temples are the major attractions here, you must visit as many temples as you can during your stay. The Kandariya Mahadev temple is popular around the world. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva and was built between 1025-1050 AD. The walls have images and sculptures of women, and you'll find a Shiva Linga inside the temple, which is how Lord Shiva is worshipped in a lot of places. You will have to pay a small fee to enter the temple, and you will also have to adhere to the temple timings.

The Lakshmana temple, which was dedicated to Lord Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh, was built by the Chandela rulers. It is one of the oldest and most important temples in the area. You will also find a statue of the three deities at the entrance. The temple has over 600 carvings of different Hindu deities, and the exterior architecture will take your breath away. Manjeshwar temple is one of the Shiva temples in Khajuraho that does not have any erotic sculptures or carvings on them. Even though the design is very simple, this temple has a very spiritual effect and the morning aarti will definitely lift your mood.

Jagdambi Temple is another architectural marvel that Khajuraho has to offer. Adorned by enchanting sculptures and carvings, the temple that is dedicated to Goddess Parvati and Maa Kali is visually stunning. The State Museum of Tribal and Folk Art has artefacts of the tradition and religious aspects of the city along with the different relics. You will be able to understand the culture and history of the place better in this museum.

The Raneh Falls is carved out of a deep canyon and is 20 km away from Khajuraho. The valley in which you will find the waterfall is made of crystalline granite. It shows shades of red, pink and grey. It's a beautiful sight to behold and one of the best places to take lots of selfies. If you are planning a picnic with your friends or family, head over the Beni Sagar dam that is built over River Khuddar, it's a popular place for picnickers from all over the country.

Things to do in Khajuraho

You can take a tour of the temples in Khajuraho since it is known for its temples and their architecture. The temple also organises a special Sound and Light show that you can attend. The show is put up by the authorities near the Western Group of Temples. You'll know the importance and history behind each one of the temples that were built in Khajuraho.

Head over to Chhatarpur's Panna National Park, which is also a tiger reserve. You will spot a tiger if you are lucky enough, but you will easily spot cheetahs, langur, jackal, wild boars, vulture and many other animals here. Opt for a safari to get around the national park. Attend the Khajuraho Dance Festival. It's a very popular event organised in the month of February. The performances will make you want to give the artists a standing ovation.

Check out the bewitching beauty of the Pandav waterfalls. It is believed that the Pandavas walked through the waterfall here during their exile, which also inspired its name. You'll come across the waterfall inside the Panna National Park. Visit the Ajaigarh fort that was built by and for the Chandela Kings. This is one of the most important pieces of history.

Try the street food in Khajuraho. Different types of chaats with the most delicious chutney is all you need to make your day. It's a treat to your tummy and your mind. The Khajuraho railway station connects with all the major cities pretty well. You can take a taxi from outside the station to your hotel.

By Road
