Surrounded by the Sahyadri (Western Ghats), Igatpuri is a dream for hikers and trekking enthusiasts. A lot of Indian movies shoot their outdoor scenes here, especially the song sequences. Around it stretch green fields and Mount Kalsubai – Maharashtra’s highest mountain. From this point, should you choose to explore further, there is a path to the Ratangad Fort. The temple can be reached by boat or an 8km boat ride on Arthur lake.
Dhamma Giri Meditation Centre
Founded by S.N. Goenka, It is a meditation centre that provides courses in Vipassana ( insight meditation). Buddha himself had taught this technique over 2500 years ago. Its large golden pagoda also functions as a landmark in Igatpuri. Dhammagiri is flocked to by people from all over India and also abroad.
Ghatandevi Temple
After you cross the Camel valley, you will reach a small road that takes you to the Ghatandevi Temple that lies just beyond Igatpuri. Ghatandevi is believed to be the protector of the Ghats. The Durrar Utvad, Harihar, and Trimak Mountains are clearly visible from here, along with the Tringalwadi Fort that lies just behind the Temple.
Camel Valley
Just to the right of the Bhatsa river valley lies the Camel Valley. At its opposite end is a waterfall that is formed by the monsoon rains. The waterfall is 1000 feet high and is one of the main tourist attractions in Igatpuri.
