Garuda Indonesia began to operate in the Indonesian war of independence against in the late 1940s. In January 1949, the first commercial flight operated from Calcutta to Rangoon. This flight is considered as the founding day for the airlines. By mid-1950s, the airline had a fleet of 38 aircraft. The fleet added more planes for the during the 1960s. In 1965, plans to expand beyond the Asian market unfolded intending to introduce new international routes, as the company brought its first Douglas DC-8. Flight operations began to Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Rome and Paris. The company also, soon, started flights to China.
The name of the airline, Garuda, has its roots in the Hindu culture and mythology. As per Hindu tradition, Garuda is the name of Lord Vishnu's mount. The name was given to the flight in 1949 at the Dutch–Indonesian Round Table Conference. Indonesian President Sukarno had recited a poem composed by the celebrated poet Raden Mas Noto Soetoro. The words of the impressive poem were, "Ik ben Garuda, Vishnoe's Vogel, die zijn vleugels uitslaat hoog Boven UW eilanden". The poem translates into "I'm Garuda, Vishnu's Bird, that spreads its wings high above the Islands".
In 2009, Garuda Indonesia announced a competitive five-year expansion plan dubbed as the Quantum Leap. The airline underwent a brand change, including a change in logo and staff uniform. By 2014, Garuda Indonesia was running five flights to Amsterdam every week. In 2011, the airline entered the Indonesia Stock Exchange, and the government of Indonesia was the largest shareholder. A portion of the tag is attached to the passenger's ticket for identification, which should be surrendered at the arrival station.
Garuda Indonesia has a rule that says every single piece of item or baggage that has been checked-in should not be over 70 lbs/32 kg. Now, for the unchecked baggage, the items that the passenger can carry to store in the overhead compartment in the plane, they are divided into two categories. The free carry on items are passengers responsibility and should be carried with supervision as these articles are not labelled. The cabin baggage may only have a maximum length of 56 cm, width 36 cm or depth 23 cm, and also the total of the three dimensions shall not exceed 115 cm or weight of 7 kg.
