The airport is situated on National Highway 336 and is approximately 5 km from the city centre. It is recorded as the 31st busiest airports in India, in terms of passenger traffic and is the third-largest airport in the state of Tamil Nadu, after Chennai and Coimbatore. The Tiruchirapalli International Airport is also recognised as the only airport in Tamil Nadu to serve more international airlines than domestic ones. Overall, the airport allows operations and connectivity of 7 international destinations and five domestic. Originally, the airport came into existence during World War II and served the British as part of their British Airforce. It catered as a maintenance dock for warplanes. After the war ended though, the locals received permission to convert it into a civilian airport for passenger travel operations.
